Jesus Said: “For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.” This is difficult for some to accept when they look, for instance, at the great wealth of the Catholic Church and the large amounts of energy in the form of monetary means it takes to build the monolithic Catholic Cathedrals around this world. And there are many instances like this where if this money were used to feed and help the poor it would eliminate much suffering. This is one of the mysteries of how God allows such things through free will and how He interacts with this planet and its peoples.
When Christ Jesus said this about the poor always being with you, he knew that soon he would be crucified for the sins of this world. Christ knew he would be an example by showing a way for man, both the rich and the poor, to attain God and the Kingdom of Heaven within. This is done, as Jesus showed, by surrendering everything— even one’s life itself. During this time Mary Magdalene anointed the feet of Jesus with “costly” oil and some of the disciples complained that the money spent on the oil could have helped the poor instead. The disciples knew that Jesus did not choose to have anything of the material world but that he had everything as he had God!
It is your duty to help the poor when you can. Now, do something yourself to help the needy. It is your duty as a Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim, as in any Tradition you follow, and as a Human Being alive in God today in your time. It is written, so let it be!
